ABOUT US

OUR
VISION

What inspires our purpose, what drives our growth, and what compels us to action is love. The divine love that we experience from God can’t help but overflow as love for our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, and for a world that needs hope. And so, our vision is simple: Loving God. Loving each other. Loving our neighbour.

We express our love for God when we gather together for worship, and we foster that love when we spend reading His Word and in prayer. God longs for us to know the full extent of His love, and He reveals His plans and purposes for each and every one of us when we take the time to be in His presence.

He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’;

— Luke 10:27a

There is something incredible that happens when we journey together in faith. God wants to use each of us to extend His love to one another as a reminder that we are not alone on this journey of faith. We have the opportunity to encourage and strengthen one another – building each other up. As the body of Christ, we all have a role to play and we cannot be a healthy church without everyone on board. As our God-given gifts and calling are revealed in each of us, we work together to nurture that growth and those opportunities to express them.

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

— Acts 2:42-47

Each of us has the opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus. A genuine relationship with God can’t help but express itself in the way we love those around us. Consider this: Somewhere along the way in our own faith journeys, someone took the time to tell us about God’s love, and now we enjoy fellowship with Him. Who are we to stand in the way of others having that same opportunity to experience the love of their Creator? And so we seek out ways to love our neighbours, both locally and abroad, in the hopes that they come to know the God who loves them.

Love your neighbor as yourself.

— Luke 10:27b

VISION

MISSION Statement

Our calling as a church is to nurture the spiritual growth of believers in their walk with God. We shouldn’t be Christians by name only, but in the way we live. Our desire is to see people sold out for God, living their lives in complete surrender to His plans and purposes. When we are fully devoted in our relationship with God and we desire to know him, there is no stopping the overflow of love and joy to want others to experience the same life transformation!

VALUES

Core Values

1 Connect

You were designed to know your Creator and to thrive in community with other believers. At River Oaks we offer opportunities for you to connect with God through gatherings like our Sunday services. Through songs of worship and the preaching of God’s Word, we invite you to know God more and strengthen your relationship with Him. And along with your relationship with God, we know how vital it is to have healthy relationships with your church family. On your journey of faith, it’s an incredible gift to not walk that journey alone but to have a community of faith that encourages you as you go.

2 Grow

A thriving relationship with God is exemplified by your desire to be who God wants you to be. There is no greater example to follow than the one set by Jesus. At River Oaks we want to encourage you to be a fully devoted follower of Christ. Through Bible study, small groups, and other ministries, you have the opportunity to discover how God has uniquely made you and desires for you to fulfill your God-give purpose.

3 Serve

When you come to realize all the love God has for you and the joy the comes with discovering your God-give purpose, you can’t help but have that love overflow to the people around you. Not only does God give you His Holy Spirit to walk with you on your journey of faith, but The Holy Spirit empowers you for the purpose of being a witness. When you discover the gifts and passions God has given, you realize they are meant to be shared so others can experience God’s love as well. Be it in the church, in our community, or somewhere around the world, each of us is called to serve and love our neighbour.

What We Believe

The Holy Bible is divinely inspired by the Holy Spirit, and is the infallible, inerrant, and authoritative Word of God.

There is one God, eternally existent in the Persons of the Holy Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Jesus was born of the virgin Mary, both fully God and fully man, and lived a sinless life. Jesus Through his death, the eternal all-sufficiency of His atoning death, His bodily resurrection, His ascension to the Father’s right hand, and that He will come again.

Justification is a judicial act of God on the believer’s behalf solely on the merits of Christ, and regeneration by the power of the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential for personal salvation.

The Holy Spirit dwells within the believer and provides for Spirit baptism according to Acts 2:4, through whom the gifts of the Holy Spirit are made manifest for the purposes of building the church and reaching the lost.

Christ is the head of the church, and we follow His ordinances of the Lord’s Supper and water baptism by immersion for believers.

Our great hope is for the imminent return of Christ to receive his own, both the living who will be transformed, and the dead in Christ who will be resurrected bodily.

River Oaks History

After Bethel Pentecostal Church, a German congregation, closed its doors in December 1993, Pastor Paul Mittelstaedt and the church family prayerfully considered their next steps and determined to plant a new church in North Oakville. On Easter Sunday in 1994, River Oaks Community Church was planted and began meeting in River Oaks Recreation Centre.

At the same time, a multi-ethnic church, Oakville Resurrection Church, was planted in 1986 by Pastor Blake Davidson. Over the years, Pastor Blake and Pastor Paul would partner together in ministry. Discovering a kindred spirit for the church and for the city, these two congregations amalgamated in 1996 under the name River Oaks Community Church.

From the proceeds of the sale of Bethel, a plot of land across the street from the recreation centre was purchased and work commenced on a new place of worship. In 1999, construction was completed and River Oaks Community Church found its home in the building where it now stands.

Over the years, River Oaks has been blessed by the leadership of several lead pastors such as Paul Mittelstaedt, Blake Davidson, Dan Dabrowski, and Ralph Mills. The congregation has also been well served by a number of assistant pastors in various roles such as Marco Gil, Ryan Morgan, Josh Hageman, Michelle Daniel, and Clyde Williamson.

In September 2022, Pastor Josh Philip joined River Oaks as our newest lead pastor. Along with his wife Ruby and four children, Hannah, Levi, Joseph, and Ezra, they are a beautiful family with a deep passion to see people grow in their faith. They are dedicated to impacting the community and the world through the ministry of River Oaks Community Church. Under their leadership, our congregation has flourished and grown rapidly into a multi-ethnical and multi-generational church.
